The ignition switch rack gear pulls and pushes the cast tip of the rod to activate the ignition switch. GM made approx 8 different ignition actuator rods that use this 'shift interlock' design with a sliding cable. This tip was used on steering columns with a CONSOLE / FLOOR SHIFT designs only. The column shift design has an additional casting 'triangle' on one end and is available here . The floor shift design does not. Most rods are no longer available. We have a limited number of these tip and cable assemblies that can be CAREFULLY installed on your rod. Changing this cast piece is a very fragile procedure. (If you break it, you own it).


The cable came in various lengths. We have a few 13-1/2" and 16-1/2" cables available. If your interlock cable is still good (no bent wire), it can be reused as well.

To Install the New Tip on the Old Rod

We recommend using a small 'lighter torch' (butane) to heat (warm) the casting where the rod is pinched. As you are heating it, VERY GENTLY wiggle the rod out of place allowing the casting to open ever so slightly. Transfer the old rod to the new tip and again, heat the casting while GENTLY squeezing it to hold the rod. ONCE AGAIN, if you break it, you own it.
